Police in Indonesia have detained pop idol Nazril ‘Ariel’ Irham over the sex-tape scandal that started circulating on the Internet in early June.
Irham was shown in two separate videos with two women, and yesterday turned himself in to police after he was named as a suspect in the case, reports say.
Despite initially denying that the pornographic footage was actually him and his girlfriend Luna Maya, he has confronted the authorities to deal with the scandal.
The videos, which also involved a girl Irham had been previously linked to - Cut Tari, caused outrage in the Muslim nation.
If the tapes are found to be genuine and Irham, 28, is found responsible for the video, the singer could face 12 years in jail and £400,000 in fines, The Times reported.
His girlfriend Ms Maya, 26, could also lose her job as a model for Lux soap in Indonesia and Ms Tari, 32, who is married, could face up to nine months in jail for adultery.
The case is set to test Indonesia’s firm laws, which ban displays of flesh and ‘bodily movements that could incite lust’ on film.
The President, Susilo Bambang made a statement last week saying: ‘We have increasingly realised that our nation should not stay naked and be crushed by the information technology frenzy, because there will be many victims.’
When the scandal broke, several schools were raided for mobile phones so the offending clips could be removed.
And some ministers said the incident pointed, once again, to moral decay and the need for stricter controls of the internet.
Authorities will decide this week whether there is enough evidence to charge him.
