LAHORE: An office-bearer of the Pakistan People’s Party submitted on Tuesday a reference to President Asif Ali Zardari against the Lahore High Court Chief Justice for allegedly having become a “party against the PPP”.
In the five-page reference, Punjab’s finance secretary Aurangzeb Burki questioned the position of Khwaja Mohammad Sharif as the LHC Chief Justice and said the CJ had become a political person after issuing a statement that the PPP should quit the Punjab coalition if it had objections to the appointment of provincial prosecution secretary Rana Maqbool.
He also alleged that the CJ had strong relations with the Nawaz Sharif family and, therefore, might not fulfil the requirement of justice. He requested the president to remove the CJ from his office.
A lawyer has also filed a reference with the president against the LHC CJ over the same issue.
Meanwhile, PPP information secretary Fauzia Wahab told Dawn in Islamabad that the party had nothing to do with the reference because it had been filed by Mr Barki in his individual capacity.
Asked it the PPP would support the reference, Ms Wahab said: “I have so far not received the official line of the party on the issue.”
She said that it was the fourth reference filed against the LHC Chief Justice. The other references were filed by lawyers from Lahore and Dera Ismail Khan.
