Advocates to Brown: Aid disabled

About 20 local advocates, including disabled people and their families, crowded the reception area of Senator Scott Brown’s Boston office yesterday morning in an unsuccessful attempt to persuade him to break ranks with fellow Republicans and vote in favor of more federal health care funding.

Without that funding, budget cuts in Massachusetts will probably end many social services that aid the disabled here, they said.

“We’re hopeful he’ll do the right thing for Massachusetts,’’ said Josh Komyerov, legislative director for the Arc of Massachusetts, a nonprofit that organized the sit-in.

Sarah Palin Criticizes Calif. AG at Gala Dinner

Sarah Palin criticized California Attorney General Jerry Brown Friday over his investigation into her speaking arrangement at a gala dinner at a cash-strapped California university.

The 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate's speech at the 50th anniversary celebration at California State University, Stanislaus has generated intense intrigue and scrutiny since the nonprofit foundation holding the event first announced her visit in March.

The visit set off a pitched legal feud. Brown launched an investigation into the finances of the university's foundation arm amid allegations that the nonprofit violated public disclosure laws.

Obama administration poised to challenge Arizona immigration law

Reporting from Washington —

A White House showdown with the state of Arizona over its tough new immigration law is likely to unfold next week, when the Obama administration is expected to file a lawsuit aimed at blocking the state's bid to curb illegal immigration on its own, according to people familiar with the administration's plans.

Arizona officials are girding for the legal challenge. The state has raised $123,000 in private donations to defend the law, according to Gov. Jan Brewer's office. Money has come in from all 50 states, in donations as little as $1.

Obama administration officials declined to reveal the basis for the suit. But legal experts say the challenge is likely to include the argument that in passing the law, Arizona violated the Constitution by intruding on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration.

Teen love triangle at center of new "Twilight"

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" premiered Thursday to throngs of screaming young women in Los Angeles with its usual mix of razor-toothed werewolves and bloodthirsty vampires, but the movie's true heroes are the pair of lovers who long for the affection of a teenage girl.

But even as they vie for her in the third film of the smash hit "Twilight" franchise that debuts across the United States on June 30, one-time rivals werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), must ban together to save the object of their desire, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), as she becomes hunted.

As in the two previous "Twilight" movies, studio Summit Entertainment brought in a new director, this time David Slade, who is best known for horror flicks.

Global Tribute Marks Year Since Michael Jackson's Death

LOS ANGELES  (Reuters) - Michael Jackson fans worldwide paid tribute to the late King of Pop on Friday, the first anniversary of his death, by remembering him in song and dance even as his father sued the doctor accused of sending the superstar to his grave.

In Tokyo , the "Thriller" singer's followers spent the night among his possessions at a Michael Jackson exhibition, at New York's famed Apollo theater they danced to his music, and along Hollywood's Walk of Fame, they laid flowers by his star.

Jackson's sister Janet and brother Jermaine were among family members visiting a mausoleum at the Forest Lawn cemetery near Los Angeles, where the singer's body was laid to rest, and his mother, matriarch Katherine, appeared at the unveiling of a monument outside the family's first home in Gary, Indiana.

British PM warns against 'destruction' of BP

HUNTSVILLE, Canada — British Prime Minister David Cameron warned against "the destruction" of BP as its shares plummeted close to a 14-year low amid the battle against the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The new British leader, who will hold his first bilateral talks Saturday with US President Barack Obama, said it was important for transparency over the British company's liability in the catastrophe.

"I think it is also in all our long-term interests that there is some clarity, some finality, to all of this, so that we don't at the same time see the destruction of a company that is important for all our interests," he told Canadian broadcaster CBC.

BP has increasingly come under fire from the US administration for triggering the country's worst ever environmental disaster when a BP-leased rig exploded in the Gulf in April.

Despite desperate efforts, BP is still not capping all of the estimated 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil spilling into the sea every day.

Internet pornography to get its own red light district as .xxx name approved

The internet could soon have its own red light district after the ".xxx" suffix was approved – though pornography companies are not keen to use it.

Icann, the organisation which determines what "top-level domains" (TLDs) such as .com or .uk can be added to the internet announced today that it will begin the process of registering .xxx by making checks on ICM Registry, the company that wants to run the domain and sell registrations.

It marks the closing stages of a 10-year battle by ICM Registry, now run by the British internet entrepreneur Stuart Lawley, to get the .xxx domain set up so that legal pornography sites can be found in a single grouping.

Bollywood makes Osama bin Laden spoof

MUMBAI — India's Bollywood cinema, known for its exuberant song-and-dance sequences and romantic plots, is to explore new territory with a satire on Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

The movie, "Tere bin Laden" (Without you, Laden), is a story set in Pakistan about a young reporter who seeks to migrate to the United States in search of fame and fortune.

The reporter, played by Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar, is denied entry and his visa rejected after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

The farce follows a storyline in which the reporter makes a video with a bin Laden look-alike and becomes the centre of a major White House investigation.

"People want new concepts, not commercial films," director-writer Abhishek Sharma told AFP.

According to an official of Musharraf’s still-to-be-registered political party All Pakistan Muslim League, a number of PML-Quaid-a-Azam politicians are encouraging the retired general to return to Pakistan and base his party headquarters in Lahore.

Wife of racing boss found dead after dominatrix session 'was unaware of husband’s S&M penchant'

The chronically-ill wife of a British motor racing chief who died after a sadomasochistic sex session knew nothing of her husband’s penchant for S&M, it is understood.

Robin Mortimer, 58, was discovered dead at the villa of the self-styled torturer Miss Lucrezia in a tiny hamlet in western Belgium on Tuesday.

Mr Mortimer’s wife Bridget, 50, suffers from multiple sclerosis, and was too ill to speak about her husband’s death today.

He may have choked on a rubber ball or died after taking an anaesthetic designed to prolong sadistic sex sessions, prosecutors said.

Wimbledon: Justine Henin v Nadia Petrova as it happened

Justine Henin tells BBC Sport: "I am very happy the way I played today. That may be the best level I have played since I have come back. It is not like Nadia did not play well. She pushed me to raise my level so I had to play a good match to win. It is fantastic to play Kim again - it is a great opportunity for both of us and we are going to try to enjoy it."

Henin 6-1 6-4 Petrova
Petrova serving to stay in the match. Henin makes a rare unforced error on the backhand side before Petrova chokes at the net, fluffing a very wooden-looking forehand volley. Petrova then prods a backhand long and follows up with a double-fault - two match points, and Henin only needs one of them, Petrova handing it to her on a plate with a nervy-looking forehand long.

"I don't know what to say - seeing all his things makes it all come back to me," said Yumiko Sasaki, a 48-year-old Tokyo office worker who has been a Jackson fan since she was 12. "It makes me so sad to think that he is gone. He was wonderful."

World Cup 2010: Italian FA calls for inquiry into 'structural crisis'

The Italian football association president Giancarlo Abete has called for serious analysis of what he called a "structural crisis" that led to the defending champions' dismal first-round elimination from the World Cup.

Italy's 3-2 loss to Slovakia yesterday marked the first time the Azzurri had exited the World Cup without winning a game, and the 2006 champions have not won at all in 2010.

"We all know the importance of football in our country and we've disappointed tens of millions of fans," Abete said today. "We have to be realists. These are the facts. We need to reflect on the structural crisis of Italian football."

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Awaits Trial, One Year Later

Murray is the only person charged in Jackson's death to date.

We will likely never know what happened during Michael Jackson's final moments.
On the eve of what he hoped would be a triumphant return to the world stage that would re-establish him as the pre-eminent pop star of the modern era, Jackson died, seemingly alone, in a rented home in Los Angeles after a fitful night during which his private physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, supplied him with a series of medications aimed at helping the 50-year-old King of Pop get some much-needed rest.

England, USA made to sweat

England
Algeria
Slovenia
Yanks

It has become notorious, yet this headline in English tabloid The Sun summed up a widely-held view that the Three Lions would stroll through Group C. USA, too, greeted the draw with satisfaction, confident – if not quite as bullish as The Sun - that they would be strong enough to join Fabio Capello's side in the last 16. And, ultimately, both prevailed. But easy? It was anything but.

Paraguay seal top spot with Kiwi draw

Paraguay did what they had to do to top Group F with a scoreless draw with New Zealand in Polokwane on Thursday. The South Americans finished with five points, one ahead of Slovakia, who knocked out holders Italy in the group's other match, while the All Whites go out unbeaten after their third consecutive draw.

Chances were very few and far between in a contest between the naturally defensive New Zealanders and a Paraguay side who looked comfortable enough playing for the draw that would take them through.

Slovakia advance, eliminate Italy

Slovakia survived a late onslaught to beat Italy 3-2, reach the Round of 16 and eliminate their illustrious opponents. A Robert Vittek double and a stoppage-time lob from substitute Kamil Kopunek proved enough for Vladimir Weiss's team to advance as Group F runners-up, after late goals from Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella had ensured a dramatic conclusion to a thrilling contest in Johannesburg.

El Tri look to learn from past

Mexico will look to learn lessons from the past when they play Argentina in their second round match at the FIFA World Cup™ in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Mexico lost to Diego Maradona's two-times champions at the same stage of the last FIFA World Cup in Germany to an extra-time goal from Maxi Rodriguez and now have to try to work out a way of derailing this year's Argentine vintage, which swept through Group B.

Park focused solely on Uruguay

Park Ji-Sung is not looking beyond Saturday's game with Uruguay as Korea Republic bid to extend their historic run at the FIFA World Cup™.

The Taeguk Warriors cemented their place in the last 16 of a FIFA World Cup for the first time ever on foreign soil after a win and a draw sealed second in Group B.

Coach Huh Jung-Moo's target before the tournament was to reach the knock-out stage and with that achieved South Korea can now reassess their goals in South Africa.

World Cup 2010: Paraguay through after drab draw with New Zealand

Paraguay moved into the last 16 of the World Cup for the fourth time in their history after being held to an uneventful 0-0 draw by New Zealand. Paraguay knew a draw would suffice – regardless of the outcome of the other group game, between Italy and Slovakia – and neither team created many scoring chances despite displaying more urgency after the break following a turgid first half at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Paraguay finished with five points in Group F, two more than New Zealand and one ahead of Slovakia, who secured second place and qualification with a 3-2 win over Italy.

Jermain Defoe leads England through to last 16 of World Cup

Jubilant Jermain Defoe celebrates after firing England into the last 16 of the World Cup yesterday.

Millions of fans breathed a sigh of relief as Mirror columnist Defoe scored the only goal in the nail-biting win over Slovenia.

Fabio Capello’s men now face old enemy Germany on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals. Beaming Defoe said after the game: “It was brilliant. I’m buzzing.”

Capello danced with joy as England finally showed fighting spirit to beat Slovenia, then revealed his new secret weapon – beer.

World Cup 2010 paper view: It was the Mirror wot won it and where's Wayne?

As the country revels in Jermainia, the Sun absolves 'magisterial' John Terry, while the US press lose the run of themselves.
History is written by the winners. Or by the well-fed hacks shuffling around after them. And this morning that hackery clamours to congratulate Fabio Capello for masterminding a 1-0 victory over Slovenia and steering England to second place in their group behind the USA ("Life looks Fab again" reckons the Daily Star; "That is what you get, I suppose, for £6m per year," deduces an approving Alan Smith in the Telegraph.)

Oscar battle a classic Hollywood story

Aliens versus Iraq: It's Avatar versus Hurt Locker for Oscar glory

It's a classic Hollywood confrontation: a gritty little war film with modest returns against the biggest-grossing film in history. Their directors are connected: she is only the fourth woman in history to be nominated as best director — none has ever won — and he's famous as the self-proclaimed "king of the world" for his previous Oscar victory. They're ex-husband and ex-wife.

Is Bollywood coming to Hollywood?

"Slumdog Millionaire" took home eight Oscars on Sunday night, a surprising achievement for a film once thought to be straight-to-DVD fodder.

"Slumdog Millionaire" with Dev Patel and Freida Pinto has a "rags-to-riches" storyline with wide appeal.

U.S. Soccer thrusts itself into relevance

Soccer is a big deal in the United States, whether you believe that or not. There are millions of fans, some as passionate about the sport and their teams as the most committed ultra in Argentina or Italy, many as knowledgeable about the game as the most informed Englishman or German.

But of the signposts on America's road to becoming a soccer nation -- from Pele to Beckham, from 1994 to Brandi Chastain taking off her shirt, from Fox Soccer Channel to ESPN embracing the game -- what's occurred the past week might be the biggest of all.

Sara Khan quits Bidaai for Ritesh Deshmukh?

It's now well known that Sara Khan will be leaving 'Bidaai' for the greener pastures of Bollywood. It is believed that Sara Khan will feature in a film that is being produced by her boyfriend. However, we hear that there is a slight twist in her tale.

Apparently, we learnt that while Sara is all set to step into Bollywood, it's not going to be in her boyfriend's film. Instead, she's said to be featuring opposite the popular Bollywood actor, Riteish Deshkmukh.

A source says, “Contrary to the popular perception, Sara is not doing Ali Merchant's film. That project is said to have been shelved. Instead, she is doing another film. I do not know its name, but it's confirmed that Sara will be paired opposite Ritesh Deshmukh in this film.”

Adding further, the source says, “Riteish hasn't succeeded in the films where he's played the sole lead. That's why no popular actress wants to be paired opposite him in such a film. For Sara, it will be a good break, so she's accepted it.”

Both Sara Khan and Ali Merchant remained unavailable for comment.

Kareena's Stunt entry atop moving car in Golmaal 3

When it's a Rohit Shetty film, you can be sure of some high octane action sequences which include the likes of cars blasting, actors standing on top of moving bikes, etc. While his actors are expected to do some heavy-duty action sequences in his films, this time for his latest film Golmaal 3, Rohit Shetty decided to get his actress Kareena Kapoor also to do a dhamakedaar stunt sequence.

Kareena, who was also seen in Rohit's Golmaal Returns, will now be seen making a dramatic entry by standing on the bonnet of a moving car in Golmaal 3 Bebo insisted on performing the daredevil stunt scene herself and ended up doing the scene like a pro. Says a source who was present on the sets, "It was a very difficult scene.

However, she clarified the reason behind her rejection. Aishwarya said, “I was not showing attitude or anything; it is just for the lack of time. My time will be taken up by my Bollywood projects which mean that I cannot do justice to any project in Hollywood right now.”

Tom Cruise And Hollywood's Superstar Crisis Togather

A Tom Cruise action movie would normally be a huge Hollywood event — and a guaranteed hit. These days, however, people are not so sure. Cruise's career has had its ups and — more recently — its downs, and a lot is riding on the success of his new movie Knight and Day. Not just for him, either, but for the entire business model of star-powered blockbusters. NPR's Steve Inskeep talked to reporter Kim Masters about what Knight and Day could mean for Cruise — and for Hollywood more generally. An edited version of their conversation:
So, what's changed about Tom Cruise over the past few years?

Well, the question's not just what's changed about Tom Cruise, but what's changed about Hollywood? We'll start with Tom Cruise. Of course, everyone remembers the strangeness that happened a few years ago, when he was jumping on Oprah's couch, when he was reproaching Matt Lauer. He was very public about his association with the Church of Scientology, and the whole thing was actually something we've never seen before: Here was a huge international movie star spinning out of control. He had fired his publicist, and he damaged himself. But there's also the age factor. It happens to guys too. He's not a kid anymore and the bottom line is that Knight and Day is not tracking well: Audience research does not show huge interest in running out to see this movie. And therefore the panic and the finger-pointing have already begun.

Is Mission Impossible 4 About to Get LaBeoufed?

Paramount may not have anything to do with Fox's Knight and Day, but since they're back in the Tom Cruise business with both the upcoming Mission: Impossible 4 and their recently green-lit Len Grossman movie, they're keeping close watch on its box office this week. According to Deadline's Mike Fleming, a soft opening for Knight probably won't mean the cancellation of M:I:4, though it might inspire the studio to "beef up the subplot that introduces a new and younger agent who becomes Ethan Hunt's protege." Great idea! Unless you'd like to see our chilling photo illustration turned into reality, you should probably go see Knight and Day immediately.

Landon Donovan goal lifts Americans in USA-Algeria World Cup showdown

It's already being called the most memorable score in United States soccer history. A Landon Donovan goal in the 91st minute lifted the Americans during the USA-Algeria World Cup showdown on Wednesday morning to a 1-0 victory, punching a ticket to the second round of the tournament.

See the goal and complete USA-Algeria highlights here.

You'd have a hard time scripting a more compelling story. For 90 minutes - the full length of a soccer game, mind you - the United States dominated but failed to punch home a goal, suffering a rash of bad luck that included a goal called back for offsides and shots that hit the post, crossbar and goalkeeper's sprawling leg.

But in the end Donovan ran through a rebound following a Jozy Altidore rip less than a minute into stoppage time,
